Douglas P. Snyder, a Partner with the firm, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 and his M.B.A. and Juris Doctor degrees in 1981 from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Mr. Snyder practices in real estate transactions, with an emphasis on property acquisition, development and financing. He has extensive experience in traditional and structured financing of real estate projects, representing developers, investors and lenders in their debt and equity financing for project acquisition, development, construction and long-term investment. Having practiced through several periods of economic decline in the real estate sector, his experience includes the workout and restructuring of project ownership and financing during these periods. Mr. Snyder assists clients in making the difficult decisions necessary to succeed in any business environment, and on documenting and consummating their complex transactions.

Between the mid-1990s and 2007, Mr. Snyder was active handling financing packages for large commercial properties and assisting investors and developers with the structured financing options then available in the marketplace. In addition to traditional mortgage loans, these include securitized mortgage debt, “B notes,” senior and junior mezzanine debt and preferred equity. Since 2008 the commercial real estate industry has experienced upheaval, and Mr. Snyder has been deeply involved with the special needs of his clients during the “great recession.” Debt and equity restructure and modification, including foreclosures and deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure, have been significant components of his practice in recent years. This period has also seen the re-emergence of unique opportunities for investors seeking acquisitions of distressed projects at great discount, and Mr. Snyder handles many of these transactions.

Mr. Snyder also regularly assists institutional investors such as pension funds and REIT’s in their investment activity. These investments include simple acquisitions, equity financing, credit enhancement and others, including the formation of joint ventures for these purposes, for individual projects and project portfolios. He represents clients in their real estate investment activity throughout the United States, and also acts as local California counsel to out-of-state investors seeking assistance investing in California projects.

Mr. Snyder is a regular contributor to real estate industry publications regarding current issues in real estate and their legal implications, and speaks on topics of current interest in real estate to both legal and business audiences.

Mr. Snyder is member of the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate Board, and is active in the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI).

He lives in the Los Angeles area and is raising three boys with his wife.
