Overview

Eric Cohn is a land use attorney who focuses on processing development project entitlements from inception all the way through to litigation, as necessary. 

Eric negotiates and obtains land use entitlements and other government approvals in Southern California and the state broadly—conducting land use-related due diligence review, engaging directly with governmental agencies, supervising the preparation of environmental documents, and advising clients on cutting-edge strategies to make use of constantly changing state laws related to development. Eric is well versed in substantive land use laws, including the Planning and Zoning Law, Subdivision Map Act, and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)—and litigates compliance issues with land use laws as well as with local municipal codes, on behalf of developers, property owners, and public agencies. 

Prior to joining the Firm, Eric received his joint J.D./M.B.A. degree from the UCLA School of Law and the UCLA Anderson School of Management. While at UCLA, Eric was the recipient of the contract drafting award in the UCLA Transactional Law Competition, and was a member of both the Real Estate Law Association and the Anderson Real Estate Association. Prior to attending law school, Eric received his B.A., with honors, in Economics from New York University (NYU), and worked at the International Securities Exchange, Capital Group, and Ernst & Young.

Experience

Represented a public agency with defending multiple California Environmental Quality Act challenges brought against a public works project.  

Represented a property owner in challenging a municipal government that refused to allow the property owner’s by-right use of the property. 

Assisted a developer with obtaining multiple land use entitlements related to a large housing development in the City of Oakland. 

Assisted a developer with redevelopment of an infill project site in the City of Los Angeles. 

Advised a developer with the land use information needed to decide whether to proceed with acquisition and development of a former golf course property.
