Erik C. Loomis is a leading tax attorney whose practice focuses on income tax planning for real estate transactions, as well as Federal and California tax controversy matters.
Tax Planning
Erik advises individuals, partnerships, limited liability companies, corporations, and tax-exempt entities (including pension plans) on Federal and California income tax matters related to real estate investments. His practice focuses on the tax considerations associated with joint ventures, acquisitions, dispositions, workouts, and exchanges involving real estate assets. Prior to returning to private practice, Erik served in a specialist role within the Internal Revenue Service's passthrough entities practice area. This government experience gives Erik valuable insight into a wide range of matters.
Tax Controversies
Erik has served as tax counsel in several significant Federal and California income tax litigation matters. He also regularly represents taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, the California Franchise Tax Board, the California State Board of Equalization, and local assessment tribunals.
Real Property Tax Planning
Erik also has extensive experience with the application of California's real property tax laws and is frequently consulted on assessment matters. He is well versed in applying the increasingly important local variants of the California documentary transfer tax, both in structuring transactions to avoid its imposition and in minimizing its impact.
