Partner Robert Doty was recently interviewed by Law360 in an article titled "How Brownfield Legislation Can Spur More Housing In Calif." Robert met with reporter Charlie Innis to discuss the extension of the California Land Reuse and Revitalization Act (CLRRA) by California Governor Gavin Newsom. Cox Castle, in collaboration with Bay Area Council, recently championed the extension of CLRRA.

The interview covers a variety of topics, including the impact of the extension and Brownfield developments, what CLRRA does well and where it still needs improvements, how CLRRA and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) interact, and more. Robert breaks down the gap between the demand for housing versus the supply of it, and how this legislation helps shorten that gap in the short and long term. "Lots and lots of potentially good sites for housing, particularly in our urban areas, are somewhere between difficult, very difficult, or just downright impossible to put into our housing stock because of complications arising from historic industrial pollution. So, dealing with our housing problem leaves us no choice but to deal with our brownfield problem." He acknowledges that this needs to be done while maintaining and preserving wetlands, spaces for endangered species, and more.
